Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has said that the country will have a ‘unique’ vaccination strategy, available at 13,000 locations, starting ‘tentatively’ in January.

He was speaking on Sunday, following his participation in the virtual G20 summit, and also reiterated his comments made during a visit to La Rioja region on Friday, in that a ‘very substantial’ part of the Spanish population could be vaccinated against Coronavirus by the end of the first half of 2021.

He said that Spain and Germany would be the first European Union countries to have a complete vaccination plan in place. ‘The campaign will start in January and have 13,000 vaccination points,’ Sánchez told a news conference after the two-day online G20 summit.

‘Spain will implement a single national strategy, starting with priority groups’, the Spanish prime minister explained, adding that he would present the plan to his full cabinet on Tuesday. He also said more health professionals would be recruited.

He said that the country’s single vaccination strategy would be agreed upon in the Inter-Territorial Council of the National Health System between Spain’s central Health Ministry and all regional health authorities, in consultation with ‘a multidisciplinary group of experts’.

He said that the organisation of the National Health System in Spain, ‘based on primary care and universal access, with a wide geographic distribution of health centres, will facilitate equitable access to vaccination’. In addition, there would be an information and registration system for monitoring and evaluating vaccination. ‘We have a tough few months ahead of us but the road map has been drawn up,’ Sánchez said.
