CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – today’s figures

The Spanish Health Ministry now releases its figures in the afternoon instead of late morning.

The official figures* for Coronavirus (Covid-19) released in Madrid at 5pm on Monday 18 May confirm that 27,709 people have now died from the pandemic in Spain, up by 59 on yesterday – the lowest daily increase for two months.

Sunday had seen an increase of 87 Coronavirus-related deaths over Saturday. Saturday had been an increase of 102 over Friday. Friday had been 138.

The current peak of recorded deaths related to Coronavirus in a 24-hour period in Spain was on 2 April, when 950 deaths were registered.

Official figures released are for the total number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus only through a PCR test (polymerase chain reaction). That figure for Monday 18 May is 231,606 – an increase of 285 over yesterday.

Sunday’s figure for the increase of infections tested only through PCR had been 421 over Saturday. Saturday’s comparative figure had been 539 over Friday. Friday had been 546.

On Monday the Health Ministry did not release a figure for those who have tested positive through PCR and antibody testing. On Sunday that figure had been 277,719 (231,350 PCR; 46,369 antibody).

The current peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period in Spain was on 31 March, when 9,222 new cases were registered (including from PCR and antibody).

On Monday the Health Ministry did not release a figure for those who have now made a full recovery. On Sunday that figure had been 149,576.

Of the official figures released by the ministry today – and based only on the total 231,606 confirmed cases through PCR testing – there have now been 66,302 cases in the Madrid region and where 8,863 have died (from the total 27,709 across the country). There have been 55,921 cases in Catalonia and where 5,956 have died.

There are now 13,422 known cases in the Basque Country (1,466 deaths), 12,458 in Andalusia (1,358), 16,648 in Castilla La Mancha (2,898) and 10,914 in the Valencia region (1,370).

Figures for those infected with Coronavirus in other regions are now as follows: Aragón 5,503 (838 deaths), Asturias 2,369 (317 deaths), Balearic Islands 1,993 (218), Canary Islands 2,294 (153), Cantabria 2,271 (207), Castilla y León 18,512 (1,953), Ceuta 116 (4), Extremadura 2,948 (500), Galicia 9,056 (607), Melilla 121 (2), Murcia 1,556 (145), Navarra 5,178 (503) and La Rioja 4,024 (351).

70% of Spain has now moved to Phase One

From Monday 18 May around 70% of Spain moved to Phase One of the government’s four-phase de-escalation of lockdown plan, that commenced officially on 4 May and is expected to last until the end of June.
