Latest: Coronavirus in Spain figures (5 July)
There are now almost 5,000 people in quarantine across Spain after students on holiday in Mallorca in the Balearic Islands triggered a major Covid-19 outbreak, the director of the Spanish Health Ministry’s Coordination Centre for Health Alerts and Emergencies, Fernando Simón, has said.
On Monday Simón said that there were now almost 1,200 positive cases from the outbreak, after the holidaying teenagers celebrated the end of their university entrance exams last week in Mallorca. He told a news conference that it had created a ‘perfect breeding ground’ for Coronavirus as they mixed with others from around Spain and abroad.
Mallorca health authorities have been carrying out mass testing on hundreds of students after the outbreak became apparent. It is believed to have spread as hundreds of students gathered at a concert and street parties.
Officials have so far traced 5,126 travellers to Mallorca, with more than 900 Covid-19 cases in eight regions across mainland Spain traced back to the outbreak.
Scores of infected teens are still on the island. Some are being kept in their hotel rooms, while others have been moved to a hotel being used by local authorities for isolation of those with mild symptoms or suspected cases.
Simón noted that the parents of the teens are probably around 45-55 years old, and not all of that age group has received both doses of a Covid-19 vaccine, which could lead to community transmission.
The UK recently decided to include the Balearic Islands in the ‘green traffic light’ of international destinations to which its citizens can travel without the need to quarantine upon return, commencing from 4am this Wednesday 30 June. The rest of Spain will remain on the UK’s amber list.
On Monday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that Spain is to require a negative PCR or proof of full vaccination against Covid-19 for British tourists arriving to the country from this Friday onwards. Full report: UK visitors to Spain: negative PCR or fully vaccinated to be required
