The main, mass-attended events of the Sitges Carnival came to end in the early hours of Ash Wednesday, after the 39 floats in the second parade known as the ‘Rua de l’Extermini’ concluded, following the Sunday night parade of the ‘Rua de la Disbauxa’.
In the early hours of Wednesday morning, special cleaning teams went into operation, with the priority being waste collection and the subsequent cleaning of the parade route through the town – with non-drinking water.
The president of the Carnival Commission, Jordi Andreu, expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of the 2024 Carnival, by saying that ‘there are always things to improve, but the comments we have received are positive’.
‘On Friday we managed to overcome the rain, and the events on Saturday drew large crowds in the streets,’ he said, referring to the bed race and parallel celebrations. Referring to the parades, he said ‘we have to keep working to avoid gaps between the floats and ensure that everyone has their two and a half hours of parade time’.
The local councillor for traditions and festivities, Eva Martín Martínez, said: ‘Now that we close this Carnival, from April we will start working on the next one, together with the Carnival Commission, because there are many ideas that need to be worked on in time and with the endorsement of the security forces.’
Meanwhile, the Mayor of Sitges, Aurora Carbonell, expressed her satisfaction with the overall security operation: ‘We are aware that other things happen in Catalonia, but the security of the Carnival has been maintained according to what we had planned.’
