Hundreds protest in Sitges against the rise in prices of La Caixa’s social housing

The tenants of social housing of La Caixa gathered on Saturday morning in Sitges to denounce their situation and defend public and dignified housing in Catalonia.

La Caixa, through the ‘Fundación La Caixa’, and in most cases with public subsidies on public land, promoted for years the creation of flats for rent at affordable prices, supposedly as ‘social housing’.

The tenants, however, report abusive contracts, price hikes, unaffordable renovations and a deterioration of the homes that the entity does not attend to. Affected people from all over Catalonia, where there are thousands with the same situation, travelled to the rally.

The demonstration began at 11.30am in Sitges, in front of the railway station, then went down Avinguda Artur Carbonell to go to the Caixa de l’Oasi office, where the demonstrators staged a protest, chanting slogans. Afterwards, it continued through the most central streets of the town until reaching La Fragata, where the meeting culminated.

The participants in the protest arrived to Sitges from various towns and cites across Catalonia, where they also have complaints against La Ciaxa, including from Barcelona, l’Hospitalet, Cornellà, Sant Just and Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Badalona, Vilanova i la Geltrú, Gavà, el Vendrell, Reus, Vila-seca, Salou, Tarragona and Castelldefels.
