Coronavirus in Spain (9 Dec) – incidence rate above new ‘high risk’ level

The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Thursday 9 December for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 5,273,178. This is an overall increase of 26,412 against the figure released on Tuesday, of which 6,808 have been registered in the past 24 hours. Both Monday and Wednesday were public holidays in Spain and the health ministry did not release figures on those two days.

Tuesday had seen an overall increase of 43,800 over Friday, of which 4,827 were registered in 24 hours

The overall incidence rate across Spain has risen another 15 points to 305.57 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days – above the ‘high risk’ level again, which is now above 300 according to the health ministry’s new ranking of risk levels. The last time the incidence rate was over 300 was on 24 August. On Tuesday it was 290.10 and Friday 248.18. The region with the lowest incidence rate is Extremadura at 158. It is at its highest in Navarra at 956. See below for the incidence rate for each region.

The age group with the highest incidence rate is those aged under 11, at 533.The incidence rates per age group are as follows:

  • Aged 11 and under – 533.30 (previously 498.10)
  • 12-19 years – 173.43 (161.62)
  • 20-29 years – 248.81 (229.82)
  • 30-39 years – 325.63 (300.45)
  • 40-49 years – 380.85 (351.58)
  • 50-59 years – 279.50 (257.72)
  • 60-69 years – 323.23 (299.55)
  • 70-79 years – 194.24 (188.81)
  • Aged 80 and over – 138.11 (131.51)

There have now been 144.997 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 5,273,178. The figure for the past 7 days is 74,926

There are currently 5,479 people hospitalised for Covid-19 in Spain (previously 5,067), representing a 4.41% occupation of hospital beds across Spain (4.07%). 1,041 are in intensive care (948), representing 11.30% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid patients across Spain (10.29%). These figures are less than previous ‘high risk’ waves. On 24 August when the incidence rate was last at 305, the number of hospitalisations was 7,959 and the number of patients requiring ICUs was 1,769.

The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic on Thursday 9 Dec is now 88,321 – an increase of 84 since Tuesday.

Increase in infections per region & current incidence rate

Of the 6,808 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours (and current incidence rate) on Thursday 9 Dec, the numbers per region are as follows:

  • 1,366 in the Basque Country (current incidence rate: 757)
  • 796 in Catalonia (362)
  • 762 in Aragón (591)
  • 666 in Castilla y León (401)
  • 576 in Galicia (365)
  • 462 in Navarra (956)
  • 444 in Asturias (405)
  • 382 in the Canary Islands (226)
  • 376 in Madrid (181)
  • 215 in Murcia (299)
  • 176 in Extremadura (158)
  • 175 in Cantabria (297)
  • 136 in Andalusia (133)
  • 105 in the Valencia Region (332)
  • 68 in La Rioja (311)
  • 62 in the Balearic Islands (379)
  • 4 in Castilla La Mancha (141)
  • 26 in Ceuta (174)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain

Latest figures (with data collated up to Thursday 2 December) show that Spain has administered 77,157,350 jabs of the Covid vaccine. 37,655,150 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 79.4% of the total population. A further 5,499,256 ‘booster’ jabs have also been administered.
