Carlo Ancelotti’s side will be pleased with having returned to the summit of the league, after sweeping aside Granada on the weekend.
Marco Asensio and Nacho ensured comfortability for their side, as their goals put Real Madrid ahead by two within the first 25 minutes. Granada’s Luiz Suarez, not to be confused with Atletico Madrid’s striker who has the same name, pulled one back for the Andaluces on the 34th minute, but it was never going to be enough.
Los Blancos’ two goal cushion was restored in the second half with a goal from Vinicius Junior, before Rodríguez Jiménez was sent off for Granada, which all but crushed any hopes they had of getting back into the game.
Madrid’s fourth came in the 76th minute through Ferland Mendy, topping off a result that sees Ancelotti’s side leapfrog Real Sociedad to go top of the table. The early pace setters from San Sebastian only managed a 0-0 draw at home to Valencia.
Sevilla also dropped two points in their 2-2 draw with Alaves whilst Atlético Madrid bagged three points in a 1-0 win over Osasuna.
Barcelona beat local rival Espanyol by the same small margin with a penalty from Memphis Depay being the only thing to separate the sides. The win gives new manager and former player Xavi his first victory since taking charge.
Off the pitch, it has been reported that Manchester United have approached Real Madrid’s former player and manager Zinedine Zidane over the vacant manager position that opened up following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Soskjaer.
Despite Zidane initially being made the bookmakers favourite to take the job, more recent reports suggest that he has told sources close to him that he is not interested. The Frenchman left his managerial role at Real Madrid last May to end his second spell at the club as the man in the dugout.
