Coronavirus in Spain (20 Sept) – under 1,000 Covid patients occupying ICUs

CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures

The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Monday 20 Sept for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 4,935,534. This is an overall increase of 5,988 against the figure released on Friday, of which 555 have been registered in the past 24 hours.

Friday had seen an overall increase of 3,222 over Thursday, of which 1,578 were registered in 24 hours. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered.

The overall incidence rate across Spain has fallen another 7 points to 83.43 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days, the lowest incidence rate for over a year. On Friday it was 91.21 and Thursday 96.30. The region with the lowest incidence rate is Asturias at 21; it is at its highest in the Balearic Islands at 113.

There have now been 39,589 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 4,935,534. The figure for the past 7 days is 16,519. 

There are currently 3,668 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain (previously 3,809), of which 979 are in intensive are (1,028). This represents 10.71% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid patients across Spain (11.28%).

The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic on Monday 20 Sept is now 85,901 – an increase of 118 since Friday.

Increase in infections per region

Of the 555 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Monday 20 Sept, the numbers per region are as follows:

  • 83 in Catalonia (last 24hr increase: 232)
  • 77 in Madrid (400)
  • 62 in the Basque Country (154)
  • 60 in the Canary Islands (113)
  • 52 in Aragón (90)
  • 42 in the Balearic Islands (44)
  • 36 in Cantabria (25)
  • 30 in Castilla y León (82)
  • 25 in Extremadura (48)
  • 20 in Andalusia (95)
  • 18 in Galicia (67)
  • 12 in Murcia (94)
  • 10 in Navarra (28)
  • in Asturias (17)
  • in La Rioja (17)
  • 4 in the Valencia Region (51)
  • 0 in Castilla La Mancha (6)
  • 4 in Ceuta (4)
  • 10 in Melilla (11)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain

Latest figures (with data collated up to Sunday 19 September) show that Spain has administered 69,332,829 jabs of Covid-19 vaccines. 37,452,529 people have now received at least one jab, representing 78.9% of the total population. 36,005,546 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 75.9% of the total population.
