CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures
The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Friday 17 Sept for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 4,929,546. This is an overall increase of 3,222 against the figure released on Thursday, of which 1,578 have been registered in the past 24 hours.
Thursday had seen an overall increase of 4,075 over Wednesday, of which 1,727 were registered in 24 hours. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered.
The overall incidence rate across Spain has fallen another 5 points to 91.21 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. This is the lowest incidence rate for over a year – since 10 August 2020. On Thursday it was 96.30 and Wednesday 101.55. The region with the lowest incidence rate is Asturias at 27.
There have now been 43,279 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 4,929,546. The figure for the past 7 days is 17,618.
There are currently 3,809 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain (previously 3,947), of which 1,028 are in intensive are (1,058). This represents 11.28% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid patients across Spain (11.62%).
The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic on Friday 17 Sept is now 85,783 – an increase of 44 since Thursday and the lowest daily increase since 30 July.
Increase in infections per region
Of the 1,578 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Friday 17 Sept, the numbers per region are as follows:
- 400 in Madrid (last 24hr increase: 422)
- 232 in Catalonia (272)
- 154 in the Basque Country (195)
- 113 in the Canary Islands (88)
- 95 in Andalusia (54)
- 94 in Murcia (105)
- 90 in Aragón (130)
- 82 in Castilla y León (59)
- 67 in Galicia (77)
- 51 in the Valencia Region (79)
- 48 in Extremadura (60)
- 44 in the Balearic Islands (42)
- 28 in Navarra (49)
- 25 in Cantabria (46)
- 17 in La Rioja (10)
- 17 in Asturias (9)
- 6 in Castilla La Mancha (11)
- 4 in Ceuta (9)
- 11 in Melilla (10)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain
Latest figures (with data collated up to Thursday 16 September) show that Spain has administered 69,094,664 jabs of Covid-19 vaccines. 37,385,758 people have now received at least one jab, representing 78.8% of the total population. 35,784,743 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 75.4% of the total population.
