Andalusia delays de-escalation for 14 days due to incidence rate in the region

Latest: Coronavirus in Spain figures (4 June)

The Junta de Andalucía has announced that the region will remain in phase one of is de-escalation plans for a further two weeks.

Although the incidence rate is stable, its current level of 176.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, is, on average, slightly higher than in the rest of Spain (120.33). It is also far from the 150 cases per 100,000 equating to ‘medium risk’ which the Junta had hoped the region to reach by summertime.

Regional minister of health, Jesús Aguirre, said the ‘precautionary’ measure of delaying de-escalation would be some of the final efforts needed to be made before Andalusia reaches group immunity.

Aguirre noted that positive progress is being seen in hospitals, where admissions and intensive care patients due to Covid remain low. He also drew attention to the drop in the incidence of Coronavirus among Andalusians over 64 years of age.

The committee of health experts will meet again in two weeks to decide whether Andalusia may pass to phase two of de-escalation. Aguirre called for ‘caution’ from the region’s residents as, ‘the virus is still among us and continues to kill’.
