Catalan government proposes to build a ‘park & ride’ site near Sitges station

The Catalan government (the ‘Generalitat’) is developing a plan to install ‘modal interchange car parks’ (‘park & ride’ sites) in different parts of Catalonia. Three of the locations chosen are within the Garraf area: in Sitges, Vilanova i la Geltrú and Cubelles.

This plan is based on a study that states by increasing the use of public transport, ‘park & ride’ sites must be increased so that users of any type of short-distance private transport can park safely and then continue a large part of their journey by public transport, by train or bus. The sites will also take into account the changes in the concept of mobility, which has been expanded with the use of bicycles, electric scooters or shared cars and motorbikes.

The initiative has started to be implemented throughout the Barcelona Metropolitan region, where there are already 12,780 ‘modal interchange’ parking spaces.

The government also plans to double the number of parking spaces in the coming years. In Sitges, the ‘park & ride’ site is expected to have between 100 and 300 parking spaces for bikes, cars and motorbikes. Just as in Vilanova and Cubelles the proposal is already starting to take shape, the Sitges Town Council has stressed that for now, it is an initiative of the Generalitat that still needs to be worked on.
