Spain has now taken in 134,000 Ukrainian refugees, of whom over 64,000 have already received temporary protection, including accommodation and a work permit.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited the Ukrainian ‘Reception, Care and Referral Centre’ in Málaga on Wednesday, following his previous visits to centres set up in Madrid, Barcelona and Alicante. Sánchez was accompanied by the Minister for Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, José Luis Escrivá.

‘Around 72% of the people arriving from Ukraine are women and 37% are under 18 years of age,’ Sánchez said.

It is estimated that more than 15,412 children have been enrolled in Spanish schools.

More than five million people have now been forced to leave Ukraine because of the war, in addition to the more than 7 million internally displaced persons (IDPs), according to latest figures.

Sánchez highlighted ‘the enormous effort to convey and materialise the solidarity of Spanish citizens with the Ukrainian people’ during his visit to the Málaga centre, and the collaboration of all administrations and NGOs in order to ‘continue to set an example of international solidarity’.

‘We want these people to feel at home while they are with us, in a country that opens its arms to show solidarity with those who suffer the consequences of war,’ said Sánchez from the Malaga refugee centre, which will soon be enlarged by another module.

This centre has been in operation since 6 April, when it joined the reception and protection work already being carried out by the centres in Madrid, Barcelona and Alicante. ALSO READ: Madrid, Barcelona, Alicante, Málaga – main reception centres for Ukrainians.
