Spotlight: the iconic Hotel Palace in Madrid, offering gastronomic delights

Commissioned by King Alfonso XIII in 1912, the iconic hotel, The Westin Palace in Madrid, is just steps away from three of the most prestigious museums in Europe – the Prado, Reina Sofía and Thyssen-Bornemisza – aptly referred to as the Art Walk of Europe.

The Westin Palace is also ideally positioned in a cultural, historic and artistic area at the centre of the Spanish capital, an area included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as ‘Paisaje de la Luz’ (The Light Landscape).

An icon in Madrid and beyond for over a century and, following various remodels throughout its history, in which its architectural style has always been carefully preserved, the Westin Palace has been a key player in Madrid’s cultural, social, business and even political scene – from featuring in a great deal of Ernest Hemingway’s work to being the backdrop to major political and historic events at the adjacent Spanish Parliament house.

Indeed, beneath its spectacular stained-glass cupola in the main restaurant, the hotel’s walls have been witness to much of the history of Spain, including some unmentionable secrets and a wealth of anecdotes.

Those looking for a sumptuous festive break or a gastronomic treat need look no further. Even without the special events and gala menus organised for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, the hotel boasts four key venues, from haute cuisine to delicious cocktails.

La Rotonda Restaurant, with its spectacular stained glass dome, is the main restaurant and the heart of the hotel, always offering locally sourced market cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Its Sunday Opera and Lunch is considered the best in the city.

Lovers of Asian cuisine will highly appreciate dining at the Asia Gallery, the hotel’s Chinese haute cuisine restaurant, which attracts a range of diners drawn by its atmosphere, delicious Cantonese food and service.

The Green T Sushi bar is a cosy sushi and cocktail bar offering first class Japanese food and some Spanish tapas, whilst the 1912 Museo Bar is a unique museum and bar where guests are able to enjoy the finest wines and cocktails as well as admire part of the historical legacy of the hotel.

Specifically for the festive season, however, The Westin Palace is also offering a complete Christmas and New Year’s programme. You can savour the Christmas Day magic with a delicious lunch accompanied by a live opera performance and a special repertoire dedicated to Christmas, for example – or see in 2022 with a New Year’s Day Lunch and Opera, accompanied by a live performance from ‘LaTraviata’ by Giuseppe Verdi. There is also a Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve Gala – with packages to also include accommodation for the total festive treat.

The Westin Palace is at Plaza de las Cortes 7, Madrid 28014. Tel: (+34) 91 360 7667. Email: reservas.palace@westin.com – For Christmas & New Year’reservations call (+34) 91 360 7666, email events.palace@westin.com – or click here for La Rotonda website.
