Catalan police detain two alleged members of terrorist cell

The Catalan police (Mossos d’Esquadra) on Tuesday arrested two alleged members of a terrorist cell planning an attack with explosives in Barcelona.

The anti-terrorist raids started on Tuesday morning in the Barceloneta neighbourhood of the city, supervised by Spain’s High Court (Audiencia Nacional).

The two men who were arrested have Algerian nationality, are aged 41 and 43, and are being investigated ‘for membership and active collaboration with a terrorist organisation, preparatory acts for terrorist activity, training and self-indoctrination’, according to a Mossos statement.

The arrests are the second phase of the ‘Alexandria’ police operation, which also led to 19 arrests in Barcelona and the town of Igualada in January 2019. Four of those suspects remain in pre-trial detention.

The Mossos statement said that with the arrests on Tuesday morning, the terrorist cell is now considered ‘neutralised’.
