Spanish master Bermejo arrives in Barcelona

Some 21 oil paintings by the 15th-century Spanish master painter, Bartolomé Bermejo, have gone on display at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC) as part of a collaboration with Madrid’s Prado Museum.

The exhibition, which received 120,000 visitors during its time at the Prado, is curated by Joan Molina, professor of Art History at Girona University, who says Bermejo’s religious images ‘shock the eye’ of the viewer.

The exhibition can be visited until May 19. The selection of works on display covers almost the entire output of the Gothic painter.

Among the 21 paintings are famous pieces as ‘Saint Michael Triumphs over the Devil’ and ‘Pietà,’ which was recently restored and rarely leaves its home in Barcelona Cathedral.

While some works have been supplied by the Museu Nacional and the Prado, others come from different galleries and collections around the world, such as Seville’s Museo de Bellas Artes, the San Diego Museum of Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, the British Museum, and the ‘Petit Palais’ in Paris.

Once the exhibition comes to an end in May, many of the works will travel to the National Gallery in London, where they will be on display from June under the title, ‘Bartolomé Bermejo, Master of the Spanish Renaissance‘.

When: 15 February to 19 May
