Traditional toy market returns in Barcelona

Barcelona’s long-running Christmas market dedicated to toys, games and sweet treats, the Fira de Reis, has opened its 2018 edition on Gran Via de les Corts Catalans.

Officially called the Fira de Sant Tomás i Reis a la Gran Via, this annual event features over 50 stands selling all kinds of toys and games.

Traditionally gifts in Barcelona are given on 6 January, Kings’ Day, and each year local children excitedly await the Three Kings who deliver their presents overnight on 5 January. Many families visit the market so that children can decide what to put on their list for the Kings.

In addition, part of the Fira de Reis is given over to traditional items and artisan products, making it ideal for finding gifts for all ages.

And when visitors get peckish, there are also around 10 churro stands selling the popular deep-fried doughnut fingers that are accompanied by a cup of hot chocolate for dipping.

In total, Gran Via is host to around 200 different stalls, and what’s more, on 5 January, the fair stays open until 3am for last-minute purchases.

When: 20 December to 5 January; Mon-Fri and public holidays: 10am-9pm; Sat, Sun and days before public holidays: 10am-10pm; 5 January 10am-3am (the closing time may change depending on the number of visitors).

Where: Gran Via de les Sorts Catalans between Rocafort and Muntaner
