Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has accepted an invitation from Cuba‘s president to make an official visit to the island – the first by a Spanish premier in over 30 years, his office said Tuesday.
During a meeting with Cuban president Miguel Diaz-Canel in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, Sánchez accepted the invitation to visit Cuba ‘as soon as possible’, it said in a statement.
The last Spanish prime minister to visit Communist-ruled Cuba, a former Spanish colony, was Felipe Gonzalez in 1986.
Spain is the main foreign investor in several sectors of the Cuban economy, including tourism and financial services, and is one of the island’s biggest trading partners, according to Spanish foreign ministry figures.
Spain was Cuba’s third supplier of goods in 2016 after China and Venezuela.
