‘Tàpies Today’ exhibition opens in Barcelona

Barcelona’s Galeria Mayoral art gallery inaugurates a new exhibition dedicated to Catalan artist Antoni Tàpies (1923-2012) on 17 January. It also marks the beginning of the gallery’s celebrations to mark its 30th anniversary.

Entitled Tàpies Today, the monographic show traces the development of the artist’s informal work through 12 specially selected works that were created between the 1950s and early 21st century.

The exhibition’s curator is Arnau Puig, a friend of Tàpies and an expert on his work; he describes the pieces on show as ‘pure emotional expression; a clamour of sorts’.

Puig’s selection features works that employ Tàpies’s familiar use of symbolism and techniques including collage and mixed media, reflecting a critical attitude towards certain socio-political contexts and created as a personal call for peace.

Eastern philosophies, empty space, poetry and humanism are all present, highlighting the ongoing pertinence of the artist’s creations.

When: 17 January-13 April

Where: Galeria Mayoral, Consell de Cent, 286
