Tenerife footballer Jesús de Miguel dies aged 30 following collision in Andorra match

CD Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel has died in hospital following a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during Monday’s Spanish second-division fixture in the Canary Islands.

The 30-year-old died at 8am on Tuesday, the club confirmed. He had been taken to the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria after collapsing during the closing stages of the match at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López stadium.

‘Broken with grief, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe this is true, we at CD Tenerife announce the tragic death of Jesús de Miguel Alameda this Tuesday, 3 November 2026, at 8am,’ the club said in a statement.

‘There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can ease this feeling of overwhelming sadness. We stand alongside his devastated family, his loved ones and the entire Tenerife football community, which today mourns this cruel outcome.’

The statement said De Miguel’s family thanked everyone for their messages of support and asked for the utmost respect for their privacy ‘at these terrible moments’.

Collision during a late counterattack

De Miguel was pursuing a ball from around the halfway line as Tenerife attempted to launch a counterattack when Owono came well outside his penalty area to intervene.

According to Spanish media reports, the goalkeeper jumped towards the forward with his knee raised, striking him in the challenge. Owono was sent off, while De Miguel collapsed and required urgent medical attention before being evacuated by ambulance.

Play remained halted for around 10 minutes before the match was suspended in the 108th minute, with the score level at 2–2. Andorra had recovered from two goals down, scoring in the 80th and 87th minutes.

De Miguel reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest during the journey to hospital and was resuscitated by emergency personnel. He was subsequently admitted to intensive care, with Tenerife initially describing his condition as stable but serious. In an overnight update, the club announced that his neurological condition had deteriorated. His death was confirmed later on Tuesday morning.

The fixture had originally been scheduled for Sunday but was postponed by a day because of a heavy-rain alert on the island.

Tributes from Andorra

Andorra, owned by former Barcelona and Spain defender Gerard Piqué, also offered its condolences.

Born in Madrid, De Miguel began his senior career with Leganés B in 2015 and went on to play for several clubs in Spain’s lower divisions before joining Tenerife last year.
