Madrid confirms first case of Brazilian variant of Covid-19

Latest: Coronavirus in Spain figures (22 Feb)

Madrid health authorities have confirmed the first case of the Brazilian variant of Covid-19 in the region, three days after Spain restricted air travel with Brazil and South Africa to combat the spread of virulent new strains.

The Madrid regional government said that a 44-year-old male who entered Spain on 29 January from Brazil, via Madrid Barajas Airport, had been detected with the variant.

On Wednesday, Catalan health authorities confirmed that a patient had been diagnosed in Barcelona with the South African variant of Covid-19. This was the second confirmed case in Spain, following another case detected in the region of Galicia last week.

The British strain of Covid-19 has also already been detected throughout Spain, in different regions. The two variants, along with that from Brazil, now detected in Madrid, are more contagious than the initial strain of the virus.
