British paraglider dies after collision with power lines in Catalonia

A British man has died in a paragliding accident in north-east Spain after reportedly becoming entangled in power lines before crashing to the ground.

The 63-year-old was flying near the village of Palau de Noguera, close to the town of Tremp in the Catalan province of Lleida, when the tragedy occurred on Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency services were alerted at around 1.20pm local time after reports of a serious accident involving a paraglider.

Firefighters, paramedics and police officers rushed to the scene, with rescue teams searching the area before locating the Brit with critical injuries. He was given emergency treatment at the scene while awaiting the arrival of medical crews, but despite efforts to save him he died from his injuries.

Three fire crews from the nearby Tremp and Sort stations were mobilised, along with two teams from the Emergency Medical Service (SEM). The regional Mossos d’Esquadra police force also attended, with local reports saying five patrols, including citizen security and investigation units, were deployed.

Local media, citing sources close to the investigation, reported that the paraglider appeared to have struck or become caught in electrical cables before falling to the ground. Authorities have not officially confirmed the exact cause of the accident, although a police investigation remains ongoing.

The victim’s identity has not yet been made public and it was not immediately clear whether he was living in Spain or visiting the country on holiday.

The accident happened in an area popular with paragliders and other outdoor sports enthusiasts. Tremp lies in the foothills of the Pyrenees, attracting adventure tourists from across Europe because of its favourable flying conditions and mountainous scenery.

The fatality is the latest in a series of paragliding accidents reported in the region. Last month, a 68-year-old paraglider died in a separate accident in Àger, also in the province of Lleida.

The death also echoes another fatal accident involving a British paraglider in July 2023 in Portugal. Emergency responders launched a search after receiving reports that a paraglider had crashed near the beauty spot of Vale Bom in the municipality of Cadaval, north of Lisbon.

The victim had already suffered cardiac arrest when rescuers located him in an area described as difficult to access. Despite treatment by medical teams, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Portuguese accident occurred close to the Montejunto Mountains, a scenic region known for its windmills, vineyards and paragliding opportunities.
