Three dead after strong winds and rain hit southern Spain

Severe winds and torrential rain swept across southern Spain on Friday, resulting in the deaths of three men inside a warehouse whose roof was torn off, authorities said.

The incident occurred at a farm near Coria del Río, a town with roughly 30,000 inhabitants located about 15 kilometres from Seville, according to a spokesperson for local emergency services.

‘The person who raised the alarm explained during the call that the roof had been blown off and the walls had been damaged,’ the spokeswoman said.

Upon arriving at the scene, emergency responders discovered the bodies of three individuals, she confirmed.

The deceased, aged between 40 and 61, are believed to have been working at the warehouse, said Francisco Toscano, a representative of the Spanish central government in Seville, speaking to the media at the location.

Toscano noted that two of the victims were brothers.

Initial findings suggest the destruction to the warehouse ‘seems to be from a tornado’, he said.

Spain’s national meteorological agency, Aemet, had issued a weather alert across much of Andalusia on Friday, warning of intense winds and rainfall brought by Storm Nuria, which was also impacting neighbouring Portugal.

This marks the fifth storm to strike Spain since early March. The country has received 2.5 times the typical amount of rainfall for the month, according to Aemet. ALSO READ: The rain in Spain … has also helped to drive down inflation.

Altogether, the recent series of storms has led to ten fatalities, including the three reported on Friday.
