Shooting at Marbella club leaves at least five injured

UPDATED at 13.30h on 18 July in Spain.

Four people were shot and another was injured by a knife at the Opium Beach Club in Marbella (Andalusia) in the early hours of Monday morning, police said.

Two of those shot were in serious condition, police said in a statement. They are an Irish man and a woman.

The shooter, reportedly a Dutch national, endured stab wounds to the head and chest and has been taken to a hospital in a serious condition.

Police didn’t say what might have triggered the violence, which occurred after midnight Sunday. Police have not given the names of those involved.

Initial posts on social media said that one person died after the shooting at the club but this has not been confirmed by the Spanish police.

The incident transpired shortly after 1am when a fight broke out at the club. Firearms and knives were brandished, and the gunman opened fire at the crowded venue.

Footage shared online (see below) shows a fight breaking out among revellers in the VIP section, before a shooter took out his gun, causing a huge stampede as partygoers desperately fled the venue.

Spanish media has reported that the incident took place at the club at the same time that Froilán de Marichalar, nephew of the king of Spain, was also at the club celebrating his birthday. He is the son of Elena de Borbón, King Felipe’s sister.
