Clinical Spain march into World Cup last 16 with dominant display against Austria

Spain underlined their World Cup credentials with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Austria on Thursday, producing arguably their most complete display of the tournament as Mikel Oyarzabal scored twice to send the European champions into the last 16.

Pedro Porro added Spain’s second goal as Luis De La Fuente’s side dominated possession from start to finish, carving open the Austrian defence with a fluent attacking performance while extending their impressive defensive record. La Roja have now gone four matches without conceding a goal, with goalkeeper Unai Simón yet to be seriously tested after Austria failed to register a single shot on target. The victory, Spain’s first World Cup knockout win since lifting the trophy in South Africa in 2010, sets up a last-16 meeting in Dallas on Monday against either Portugal or Croatia.

‘I’m happy to have helped the team for us to go through another round,’ Oyarzabal said. ‘Now just rest and get ready for the next one. It was a complicated match. We knew that it was going to be difficult against a very physical team, but we had a very good day and played a good match.’

Spain’s performance reinforced their status as one of the tournament favourites after an unbeaten group stage that had still left some questioning whether their talented squad could reproduce its best football when it mattered most. Having won the 2023 Nations League and the 2024 European Championship before losing the 2025 Nations League final to Portugal on penalties, De La Fuente’s team are now unbeaten in 35 consecutive competitive matches since March 2023. A sell-out crowd at SoFi Stadium created a sea of red for Spain’s first appearance in Los Angeles at this World Cup, with Hollywood stars Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem, along with singer Rosalía, among those watching from the stands.

Much of the crowd’s loudest applause was reserved for 18-year-old Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal, who repeatedly troubled Austria’s defence during his longest appearance of the tournament before being substituted in the closing stages.

Austria, appearing in the World Cup knockout rounds for the first time since 1998 after scraping through the group stage with a dramatic injury-time equaliser against Algeria, began cautiously under coach Ralf Rangnick. Their hopes of recording a first World Cup knockout victory since 1954 were gradually worn down as Spain tightened their grip on the contest.

After a measured opening spell, Spain steadily increased the pressure following the first-half hydration break. Marc Cucurella briefly thought he had opened the scoring after turning in a Yamal corner, only for the effort to be ruled out because Pau Cubarsí was adjudged to have interfered with goalkeeper Alexander Schlager.

Schlager then produced an outstanding fingertip save to push Oyarzabal’s low drive around the post, but Spain’s breakthrough finally arrived in the 36th minute. Pedri switched play to Cucurella on the left, and the defender’s perfectly weighted cross found an unmarked Oyarzabal, who calmly side-footed home his third goal of the tournament.

Spain almost doubled their advantage before the interval when Álex Baena’s superb 25-yard free-kick crashed against the crossbar, while Schlager reacted brilliantly to deny Yamal from point-blank range after the rebound.

Austria’s best opportunity came at the opposite end when Romano Schmid found the unmarked Stefan Posch arriving inside the area, but the defender’s heavy first touch squandered the opening before he could even attempt a shot.

Spain resumed after the break with the same authority, moving the ball sharply and creating a series of chances while Austria attempted to change the momentum by introducing towering forwards Sasa Kalajdzic and Marko Arnautovic. Kalajdzic headed over shortly after coming on, but the tactical switch failed to stem Spain’s control.

The second goal arrived in the 66th minute when Baena floated an inviting cross into the area and Porro powered home a header for his first international goal, putting Spain firmly in command.

Yamal continued to torment Austria’s defence, forcing David Alaba into a crucial goal-line clearance after beating Schlager with a fierce shot. Moments later, the teenager was substituted to a standing ovation from the Spanish supporters.

As Spain confidently stroked the ball around the pitch to chants of ‘Olé’ from the crowd, they put the result beyond doubt in the 89th minute. Cucurella delivered another precise cross from the left and Oyarzabal, again left completely unmarked, calmly slotted home his second goal of the evening to complete an outstanding individual performance.

‘The great teams step up when it’s needed,’ Spain coach Luis De La Fuente said. ‘We played a great match. We came close to perfection, but we must keep improving. There is always room for improvement, because every upcoming match will be very difficult.’

While Simón completed another comfortable clean sheet – having needed to make only four saves across Spain’s four shutout victories so far – Austria could at least take encouragement from the performance of Schlager, who produced six saves to prevent an even heavier defeat.

For Spain, however, this was the kind of commanding display that suggests they are once again genuine contenders to lift the World Cup, ending a long wait for a knockout victory on football’s biggest stage and moving confidently into the last 16.
