Man held after three British women allegedly sexually assaulted at Valencia hostel

A 32-year-old man has been arrested in Valencia after allegedly carrying out separate sexual assaults on three British holidaymakers, including two teenagers, at a hostel in the Spanish city.

The suspect is accused of pretending to be an employee at the accommodation before targeting two young women aged 18 and 19.

According to local reports, the incident that led to his arrest took place shortly before 1.30am on Tuesday after the pair returned to the Aiora Hostel in a Uber.

The man, who is believed to have been staying at the hostel as a guest, allegedly opened the door for the women and convinced them he worked there. He then reportedly persuaded them to follow him to a bathroom, where he is accused of sexually assaulting them following a struggle.

The women reportedly became suspicious and attempted to leave, but the suspect allegedly grabbed them by the arms to prevent them from doing so. He is said to have groped the 19-year-old and attempted to kiss the younger woman while placing his hand under her skirt.

Reports also claim he later followed them into the women’s bathroom, removed his clothes and began showering.

The two women subsequently contacted police. When officers arrived, a third British woman, aged 26 and understood to have been sharing a room with them, told investigators she too had allegedly been sexually assaulted by the same man two days earlier.

She reported that while brushing her teeth in the women’s bathroom on Sunday morning, the suspect approached her from behind, put his arms around her and rubbed himself against her without consent.

A spokesman for the National Police in Valencia said: ‘We received a call about 2.30am yesterday morning (9 June), asking us to go to a hostel in the city where a man had apparently sexually assaulted two women. The alleged victims are three young British women. One of the incidents happened around 1.20am that same morning and the other on Sunday.’

The hostel where the alleged assaults took place is situated in Valencia’s Camins al Grau district, around 10 minutes by car from the city’s historic centre.

The arrest comes amid a number of recent investigations into alleged sexual attacks involving tourists in Spain.

Incidents in Mallorca

Last month, police arrested a van driver in Mallorca (Balearic islands) on suspicion of abducting a young British tourist and sexually assaulting her after allegedly forcing her into his vehicle as she walked back to her hotel from a nightspot in Palma.

Investigators said the man got out of his van, grabbed the woman by the arm and forced her into the passenger seat before driving away and allegedly assaulting her while on the road.

The victim, whose age has not been disclosed, reportedly escaped only when the suspect stopped at a red light. Two people travelling in a vehicle behind them, who had witnessed the alleged abduction, intervened and later provided police with a photograph of the van’s licence plate, helping officers identify and arrest the suspect.

That incident occurred during the early hours of 11 May on Palma’s seafront Paseo Marítimo.

Just days earlier, on 1 May, another foreign tourist was allegedly sexually assaulted near Manacor, between Palma and Mallorca’s east coast, by two men she had met in a bar.

Police said the woman told them she began feeling ill after leaving her drink unattended while she went to the toilet. The two men allegedly offered to drive her back to her hotel but instead took her to a secluded area where she reported being sexually assaulted in the back seat of their car.

She managed to escape and sought help from local residents, who alerted the authorities.
