British couple die after Ferrari plunges into river in northern Spain

The two occupants of a Ferrari sports car, both British, died over the weekend when the vehicle came off the road and landed in a river in northern Spain.

The accident happened on Saturday afternoon in a mountainous area on the N-621 highway, connecting the regions of Castilla y León and Cantabria, within the municipality of Boca de Huérgano (province of León).

For still unknown reasons, at around 1.30pm the car fell into the Yuso River near kilometre 112 of the N-621 road. The vehicle overturned, and part of it was submerged in the water, according to sources from the 1-1-2 Castilla y León Emergency Service.

Spain’s Guardia Civil police said that the victims were a a 78-year-old man and a 58-year-old woman.

A British Foreign Office spokesperson confirmed: ‘We are supporting the families of a British man and woman who died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.’

According to reports, the local authorities said firefighters had to clear thick vegetation in order to reach the car, and that both occupants of the car were already dead when their bodies were recovered.
