An explosion in the town of Mieres in the northwestern region of Asturias on Monday afternoon has left at least 18 people injured, three of which are minors and in a serious condition.
The Emergency Service of the Principality of Asturias (SEPA) said that one of the critically injured people was transported to a burn unit in Madrid and the other two were taken to a hospital in nearby Oviedo. Two additional victims are under observation at nearby hospitals in Mieres and Langreo.
SEPA said its teams were still searching for anyone trapped beneath the rubble on Tuesday morning with the help of sniffer dogs, before demolition work would begin. According to SEPA, 49 people have been relocated to new residences following the explosion.
The central government delegate in Asturias, Adriana Lastra, confirmed that there were no deaths after the gas explosion, which caused the collapse of the residential building.
‘Several works were being carried out at the same time’ and it seems that in one of them the gas supply was damaged. ‘We have to study what could have happened’, since ‘a gas pocket could have collected even with the gas cut off’, she explained.
Firefighters from the Mieres fire station confirmed that the house was in ruins and that there was also fire in an adjoining house.
Adrián Barbón, regional president of Asturias, wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that the tragedy ‘could have been much bigger – I assure you’.
He praised the ‘perfect coordination’ of all the rescue services, including ‘Asturias Firefighters, 112, Civil Protection, Red Cross, State Security Forces and Corps, Mieres City Council workers, Local Police, health personnel and TRANSINSA health transport personnel’.
