Catalonia lifts restriction of maximum 10 people at social gatherings

Latest: Coronavirus in Spain figures (13 Sept)

Catalonia will not be extending the restriction of having a maximum of 10 people at social gatherings from this Friday 10 September (starting after midnight on Thursday), when the current measure comes to an end.

Catalan government spokesperson Patrícia Plaja said on Tuesday that restrictions affecting ‘fundamental rights’ and requiring ratification by the High Court of Catalonia (TSJC) will not be extended further. It also affects the capacity limit for religious events, currently set at 70%.

At the moment, all activity, including bars and restaurants (as well as takeaways and delivery), cultural activities and concerts must still close by half past midnight. It is yet to be seen whether these restrictions will continue to apply from Friday [we will be updating this report]. Face masks are expected to still be compulsory in indoor public spaces.

In mid-July, the high court ratified a 1am-6am curfew in Barcelona and up to 160 other cities and towns across Catalonia, depending on the level of incidence of Covid-19. This was finally struck down by the courts on 27 August.
