Man charged for driving at 221 km/h in 90 limit – and posting video on internet

A man has been criminally charged in the Alt Empordà region of Catalonia for recklessly driving at 221 km/h on a road with a speed limit of 90 km/h. He then published a video of it on social media.

Agents of the Catalan police, the Mossos d’Esquadra, working for the regional traffic area of Girona, first received complaints in early October from residents in the town of Garriguella, who had expressed concern at the movement of various motorcycles that they claimed were endangering the inhabitants.

On 15 October, a 30-year-old man of French nationality, reportedly a resident of the same town, was charged of two crimes against road safety: reckless driving and driving at a speed punishable by law.

The police who opened the investigation found that the alleged perpetrator also had a YouTube channel and had uploaded several videos on social media of him driving recklessly, at criminally punishable speeds and even escaping from a police patrol.

In one of the videos, the man was seen driving at 221 km/h on the C-252 road, in a section limited to 90 km/h. A police statement said that the defendant had no previous criminal background, and is to testify before a court in Figueres, when required.
