Spain-Portugal border re-opened

Spain and Portugal officially re-opened their border today, three and a half months after it was closed on 17 March to combat the spread of Coronavirus (Covid-19).

Since that date, only specific crossing points reserved for the transport of goods and frontier workers had been open.

The official ceremony was held with the participation of Spain’s King Felipe VI, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, the President of the Republic of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and the Portuguese Prime Minister, António Costa – first in Badajoz in Spain, then in Elvas, in the district of Portalegre of Portugal.

A ceremony was held at the archaeological museum of Badajoz, with the hymns of the two countries played. Fifteen minutes later, a similar ceremony took place at Elvas Castle.
