On 22 February, the acclaimed Welsh bass-baritone Sir Bryn Terfel performs a recital at Madrid’s Teatro Real.
As part of the ‘Voces del Real’ (Voices of the Real) season, the singer gives a varied programme of arias that includes compositions by Richard Wagner, Kurt Weil‘s Three Penny Opera, and pieces from Oklahoma and Camelot, both by Richard Hammerstein.
He’s accompanied by conductor Josep Caballé Domenech and the Principal Orchestra of the Teatro Real.
Early in his career, Terfel was largely associated with the works of Mozart, especially Figaro and Don Giovanni – he made his debut in Così Fan Tutte at the Welsh National Opera in 1990.
In 1996, he started to expand his repertoire, taking on the role of Wolfram in Wagner’s Tannhäuser at the New York Metropolitan Opera, as well as Nick Shadow in Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress at the Welsh National Opera.
He’s also gained a reputation for performing in musicals and taking on more contemporary tunes. He was knighted in 2017.
