The Nutcracker ballet at Madrid’s Teatro Nuevo Apolo

There’s still time to see the iconic ballet of the Christmas season, The Nutcracker, at Madrid’s Teatro Nuevo Apolo, including a performance on New Year’s Day.

Russian composer Tchaikovsky wrote the music for the two-act ballet in 1892, following the success of The Sleeping Beauty that he’d created two years earlier.

It was premiered in Saint Petersburg in December 1892, but wasn’t warmly received. However, over time, audiences have keenly embraced the work and it’s regularly performed around the world, especially during Christmas, while Tchaikovsky’s music, including the 20-minute suite, has been firmly established in the collective imagination.

At the Teatro Nuevo Apolo, The Nutcracker is performed by the Russian National Ballet company based on the original choreography by Marius Pepita.

When: 1, 2 and 6 January. Doors: 4.45pm; performance starts 5.30pm.

Where: Teatro Nuevo Apolo, Plaza Tirso De Molina, 1
