Madrid’s Children’s Book Fair gets ready for 42nd edition

On 12 December, the doors open on the 42nd Children’s and Young Adults’ Book Fair of Madrid (Salón de Libro Infantil y Juvenil de Madrid) the most important annual event of its kind in the Spanish capital and one that traditionally takes place during the Christmas season.

Although focused on books for the younger generations, the fair is open to all ages and features three weeks of free activities that include workshops, storytelling, theatre and concerts.

This year’s main theme is the relationship between Spain and Japan (as the two countries celebrate the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations), as reflected in the fair’s poster image created by illustrator Violeta Monreal.

The main design for this year’s Children’s and Young Adult’s Book Fair is by illustrator Violeta Monreal.

There’ll be an exhibition from the International Youth Library in Munich featuring 70 different maps for discovering the world, as well as a show by leading Spanish illustrators reflecting their vision of Japan, and a selection of works from María Rius, winner of Spain’s 2018 National Illustration Prize.

The Madrid Children’s and Young Adult’s Book Fair is organised by the not-for-profit Consejo General del Libro Infantil y Juvenil, which promotes books in Castilian.

When: 12 December-4 January, 2019 (closed 25, 26 December and 1 January)

Where: Centro Conde Duque, Conde Duque, 11
