Heatwave in Spain to last until Sunday, with 43C in some areas

Spain’s national metereological office, AEMET, has said a mass of hot air from North Africa has brought the country’s first major heatwave of the year since the weekend – the hottest pre-summer heatwave for at least 20 years.

It is expected to last until Sunday, the agency said, with temperatures to reach 43 C in some places.

Temperatures reached 40 C in the Guadalquivir valley in Seville and the nearby city of Cordoba on Saturday, AEMET said, with the 43 C weather forecast for those two southern cities, as well as Badajoz.

Meteorologists said the temperature in Madrid could hit 38 C, well above average for early June. The forecasted high in coastal Barcelona was 32 C.
