Gibraltar begins a return to normality – without face masks outside

Latest: Coronavirus in Spain figures (7 Apr)

Gibraltarians this week have enjoyed the relaxation of Coronavirus restrictions – due to a vaccination rollout success, and a low incidence rate.

The British Overseas Territory, which has received praise for its vaccination programme, is one of few places worldwide experiencing a return to pre-pandemic normality.

As of last Sunday, locals have been able to walk the streets without the use of face masks – however, coverings are still mandatory in shops, on public transport and in closed public spaces.

A curfew has also been lifted in the territory, with bars and restaurants now allowed to open until 2am.

Alcohol consumption in public places, meanwhile, will continue to be prohibited between the hours of 7pm and 8am.

Dubbed ‘Operation Freedom’, Gibraltar’s vaccination programme has resulted in the full inoculation of around 80% of the territory’s some 34,000 inhabitants.

Fabian Picardo, Chief Minister in Gibraltar, announced last week that the current low incidence rate of Covid is ‘a demonstration of the effectiveness of our confinement and vaccination program’.

Within the next two weeks, the territory will have offered a jab to every resident over the age of 16. By mid-April the entire population is set to be administered their second dose of the vaccine.

A total of 15 cases of Covid-19 have been registered in Gibraltar this week, and there have been no recorded deaths from the disease.

Currently, there are no Coronavirus patients in the territory’s hospital, and no cases in any of the local residential care facilities.

Spain’s Europa Press agency showed a number of images of citizens enjoying their freedom in Gibraltar on Tuesday, walking around without face masks.
