Spanish PM’s wife lodges assault complaint over clash with far-right activist

Begoña Gómez, the wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, has lodged a legal complaint against a far-right activist and social media figure, alleging assault during an incident on 29 April at a café in Madrid.

According to the complaint, Gómez was approached by influencer Vito Quiles, who confronted her about an ongoing corruption investigation.

Quiles allegedly entered a café and prevented Gómez, who was with several friends at the time, from leaving. Some Spanish media report that he was already in the café, waiting for her to arrive.

In images shared online, two women can be seen intervening and physically preventing Quiles from getting closer to Gómez as she left and made her way towards a car. An edited selfie video later shared online by Quiles himself appears to show him following her outside, where he continued questioning her.

According to RTVE, Guardia Civil officers later arrived at the scene, where a security camera was pointed at the door, and they also questioned several people.

Gómez is currently under investigation over claims that she may have leveraged her position as the prime minister’s spouse to secure public contracts.

She denies any wrongdoing and a Spanish prosecutor last week asked the investigating judge to close the case, which was brought by far-right groups. ALSO READ: Spain’s public prosecutor’s office urges dismissal of case against PM’s wife.

Quiles’ behaviour towards Gómez on 29 April was roundly condemned both by members of Spain’s socialist (PSOE) government and the main right-wing opposition group, the People’s Party (PP).

However, Ester Muñoz, a spokesperson for the PP, said Quiles was ‘also a victim’ because of the actions of the women who held him back. She added that she ‘understands that there are journalists who want to ask questions’ of Gómez.

The case forms part of a broader series of corruption allegations affecting Sánchez, one of Europe’s few remaining left-leaning leaders. ALSO READ: Trial of Spanish PM’s brother for alleged corruption postponed until late May.

Separately, testimony continues this week in court proceedings involving his former transport minister.

Víctor de Aldama, a witness in the case concerning ex-minister José Luis Ábalos, told the court on 29 April that Sánchez had been aware of illicit kickback payments made to his socialist party.

A PSOE spokesperson rejected Aldama’s claims as false and said the party intends to take his allegedly slanderous statements to the Supreme Court. ALSO READ: Businessman seeks to implicate Sánchez in corruption trial as PSOE vow legal action over ‘slander’.

Meanwhile, another defendant in the trial pushed back against Aldama’s accusations, telling the court that Sánchez had no knowledge of the alleged scheme of kickbacks.

Koldo García, who is accused of acting as an intermediary in the awarding of Covid-era mask contracts, said he never discussed the matter with the prime minister and dismissed the claims outright, adding: ‘Common sense, please. No, it’s not true.’

Prosecutors allege that Ábalos abused his position to help secure lucrative contracts for Aldama, with García facilitating the deals, although both men deny wrongdoing.

The trial, which has been extended into next week, is one of several corruption probes involving Sánchez’s allies and family members that have intensified political pressure on his government, even as he has vowed to remain in office until the next scheduled elections in 2027.
