Spanish police dismantle neo-Nazi cell plotting for a ‘race war’

Spain’s National Police said on Monday that they had dismantled a Spanish branch of ‘The Base’, a transnational neo-Nazi and white supremacist organisation classified as a terrorist group by the EU, the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

According to a police statement, the US-born movement functions as a diffuse international network of paramilitary-style cells intent on carrying out attacks and preparing for an eventual ‘race war’.

The investigation, which began earlier this year, identified a group operating in Spain whose members were described as ‘highly radicalised’ and who had undergone training with ‘paramilitary techniques and equipment’.

In recent months, the group’s members had allegedly promoted ‘violent acts, even stating openly that they were prepared to carry out targeted attacks for the cause’.

Police said the cell’s leader maintained ‘direct contact’ with the organisation’s founder, who just a month ago had urged supporters to carry out ‘targeted attacks with the aim of bringing down Western democratic institutions’.

Three individuals were detained last week, including the ringleader, who has been remanded in custody on charges of belonging to a terrorist organisation, recruitment, indoctrination, terrorist training and illegal weapons possession.

During searches in the eastern province of Castellón (Valencia region), officers also recovered two guns, ammunition and neo-Nazi material.

Rinaldo Nazzaro, a US national, created ‘The Base’ in 2018 as a hub for radical right extremists preparing for armed conflict, later relocating to Saint Petersburg and acquiring Russian citizenship, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a think tank in Washington.

The European Union added ‘The Base’ to its list of terrorist entities last year, triggering measures such as travel bans and asset freezes across the bloc.
