Spain’s labour market held firm in July, a month traditionally strong for employment, though in recent years it had shown signs of strain due to the early start of the summer season.
In contrast to the nearly 10,000 jobs lost in July 2024, this year saw the creation of almost 5,000 jobs, bringing the average number of people affiliated with Social Security to 21.86 million – a new record – despite the seasonal loss of 123,699 jobs in the education sector.
Meanwhile, unemployment dropped by 0.1% in July from a month earlier, by 1,357 people, bringing the total number of jobseekers down to 2.4 million, the lowest July figure since 2007.
This marks six consecutive months of job creation and falling unemployment — a positive streak that began in February. Over this period, more than half a million people have joined the Social Security system, and around 150,000 have come off the State Public Employment Service (SEPE) register.
The figures remain encouraging even when adjusted for seasonality and calendar effects: in July alone, the labour market added 31,085 registered workers, reaching 21.64 million. As for unemployment, the seasonally adjusted decline was 188 people.
‘More jobs. Fewer unemployed. More women and young people in work. Spain is moving forward. We continue,’ said Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in a post on X.
‘The figures are very positive, but we’re not satisfied — we’re continuing to work to bring the unemployment rate down,” said Second Deputy Prime Minister and Labour Minister Yolanda Díaz in an interview on Las Mañanas de RNE on Monday.
