700 people at illegal rave in Catalonia since Friday, with two arrests

The Catalan police, the Mossos d’Esquadra, were on Sunday continuing to monitor an illegal rave party taking place since Friday near the town of Sarral (Tarragona), around 80 kilometres west of Barcelona.

On Sunday morning, police had estimated that there were around 700 people at the party.

Two people had been arrested on Saturday, one for attacking police officers and the other for serious disobedience and a crime against road safety. Five others were booked for testing positive for drugs and six for not having the mandatory ITV roadworthy test for their vehicles.

The Mossos set up two checkpoints on Saturday to limit access to the area near woods where people were gathering and the local council also blocked roads, but many were still able to reach the rave party via alternative routes.

People from France, Italy and Belgium were reportedly attending the rave, and over 100 vehicles had been parked near the woods.

The mayor of Sarral, Maria Victòria Cañís, told local Catalan media that the noise from the rave didn’t reach the town centre, although residents of the nearby village of Montbrió de la Marca were complaining about the loud music and lasers.

Cañís said that the party peaked on Saturday and expected some participants to leave on Sunday, but that she believed many would remain until Monday.
