Minor earthquake felt on Costa del Sol in early hours of Monday morning

A 4.1 magnitude earthquake with its epicentre in Málaga was detected early on Monday morning, Andalusia’s 112 emergency service control centre reported.

The authorities said it was felt most intensely in Málaga city, Mijas and Fuengirola, at ‘intensity 3’ level, and was registered at a depth of 69 kilometres at 3.48am.

The earthquake was also felt in Rincón de la Victoria and Casabermeja at ‘intensity 2’ level.

No injuries or damage to property have been been reported.

According to Michigan Tech University, earthquakes with a magnitude scale of between 2.5 and 5.4 are ‘often felt, but only cause minor damage’. Globally, there are around 500,000 earthquakes within this magnitude a year.
