Amazon to invest another €18bn in data centres in Spain, adding to €15.7bn announced in 2024

Amazon has unveiled a further €18 billion investment in data centre projects in Spain, significantly scaling up its commitment to infrastructure that underpins artificial intelligence and cloud computing.

The announcement, made on Monday during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) telecoms trade fair in Barcelona, brings the company’s total planned investment in Spain to €33.7 billion through to 2035. According to Amazon, the projects are expected to support close to 30,000 jobs.

In a statement released alongside the announcement, the company said the funding would be used ‘to expand and support data infrastructure, delivering advanced artificial intelligence and cloud computing capabilities to organisations across Europe’.

The US technology giant had already pledged €15.7 billion last year to expand its data centre footprint in the northeastern region of Aragón

Reacting to the news, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez welcomed the investment, posting on the X social network (see below) after meeting Amazon representatives at the MWC (main image): ‘In a world filled with uncertainty, our country is a safe bet.’

Despite the scale of the Spanish expansion, Amazon’s spending remains modest compared with the vast sums expected to be poured into AI and cloud infrastructure globally by major players such as Amazon itself, Microsoft, Google and OpenAI in the coming years.

Even so, the move represents a strong vote of confidence in the country. ‘A long-term bet on Spain,’ Amazon’s chief global affairs and legal officer David Zapolsky (main image with Sánchez) said in the statement.

Aragón, a sparsely populated region, has become increasingly attractive for energy-intensive projects thanks to its abundant sunshine and wind, which have fuelled rapid growth in solar and wind power across Spain. Regional leaders hope this renewable energy capacity will help establish Aragón as a key hub for the data centres required to run generative artificial intelligence. The investment comes at a time of intense debate within Europe over technological sovereignty, with growing concern about reliance on US firms for cloud data storage and processing.

At present, the overwhelming majority of cloud services used by European governments are provided by Amazon Web Services, Google and Microsoft, while domestic alternatives continue to struggle to gain a foothold.
