Spanish prosecutors seek 15-year jail term for former football president Villar

Spanish prosecutors are pushing for a prison sentence exceeding 15 years for former Spanish football president Ángel María Villar (main image) on alleged corruption charges.

On Thursday, the prosecutors announced their intention to bring Villar to trial over alleged irregularities in federation contracts signed during his tenure. They are also seeking charges against seven other individuals.

Villar led the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) from 1988 until 2017, when Spain’s administrative court for sport, the Consejo Superior de Deportes (CSD), dismissed him. His dismissal followed an earlier suspension after he, his son, and several officials were arrested on suspicion of mismanagement, embezzlement, corruption and document falsification.

Denying any wrongdoing, Villar also then stepped down from his roles as vice president of both FIFA and UEFA.

His successor at the RFEF, Luis Rubiales, took over in 2018 but resigned in 2023 after the controversy surrounding his unsolicited kiss on player Jennifer Hermoso during the awards ceremony after Spain’s Women’s World Cup victory.

Just last month, Rubiales was convicted of sexual assault for the kiss, which triggered one of the most significant crises in Spanish football history. ALSO READ: Luis Rubiales guilty of sexual assault and fined over €10k for World Cup kiss.
