Over 40 rallies organised by feminist and women’s groups took to the streets of Spain on Monday evening to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
Among many other politicians, Spain’s Minister for Equality Ana Redondo participated in one of the marches in Madrid, in which she made an appeal ‘to the whole society’.
‘Every year we march with the slogan – “Ni una más, ni una menos” (‘Not one more, not one less’), but we need men, women, young people (to participate),’ she said.
Feminism and women’s groups in Madrid were once again divided for what’s dubbed as 25N in Spanish (25 November). For the third consecutive year, the Comisión 8M and other feminist organisations held separate demonstrations, reflecting differences in views on issues such as the trans law and the regulation of prostitution.
People also marched through the streets in Barcelona and Seville. In Barcelona, the platform ‘Novembre Feminista’ organised a demonstration under the banner ‘The shame and fear for the aggressors’. In Seville, the Movement Feminist de Sevilla marched with the message ‘NO to violence against women’.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said: ‘Every woman who dies at the hands of her partner or every woman who suffers gender violence in its many forms is a defeat for democracy. We will not look away.’
‘There is still a long way to go,’ he added. ‘We need more and better coordination and to fight the battle in the field of values and awareness. This is our priority. For all those who are no longer here; and for those who are currently suffering from this violence, let us ensure that their pain is never again indifferent to us on this 25N and every day of the year.’
42 women have lost their lives as a result of gender violence in Spain in 2024 to date.
Equality Minister Redondo acknowledged the magnitude of the problem in a recent interview on TVE.
‘The scale of violence is enormous, and so is the deep-rooted machismo that continues to poison our society,’ she said. She emphasised the importance of community support in helping victims come forward, particularly in rural areas, which often face unique barriers and heightened stigma.
‘Too often, women are terrified, living in a state of absolute control,’ Redondo added. ‘We can’t always expect them to take the first step, but their community – those who know what is happening – must intervene.’
