Donald Trump storms to victory in historic comeback to become 47th US President

Donald Trump has been elected the 47th president of the United States, in an extraordinary comeback for a former president who refused to accept defeat four years ago, sparked a violent insurrection at the US Capitol, was convicted of felony charges and survived two assassination attempts.

In one of the most bitterly contested presidential elections in the history of the United States, Trump surpassed the necessary 270 electoral college votes on Wednesday morning to defeat Kamala Harris, his Democratic rival, and deny the country its first female president.

His path back to the Oval Office became clear after a win in the crucial swing state of Pennsylvania before Wisconsin sealed the deal.

Trump, 78, hailed his ‘incredible movement’ after taking the stage in Florida near his home at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach surrounded by his friends, family and political allies.

‘This will be the golden age of America,’ he said, calling his expected win a ‘magnificent victory for the American people’.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez wrote: ‘Congratulations on your victory and your election as 47th President of the US. We will work on our strategic bilateral relations and on a strong transatlantic partnership.’
