FC Barcelona will wear special edition shirts with a logo of pop rock band Coldplay on their fronts for the upcoming ‘El Clásico’ match against Real Madrid.
Hansi Flick’s team will wear the shirts when it visits Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on 26 October. Barcelona women’s team will also wear them for a Spanish league game against Eibar on 2 November.
The club is also launching versions of the shirts for sale in limited editions. The proceeds will be donated to a project by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the Barça Foundation to help fight the impact of climate change in refugee camps in Uganda.
The emblem that will appear on the jersey is inspired by the band’s tenth album ‘Moon Music’, which was released on 4 October.
A statement from Barça said: ‘Coldplay is the most streamed British band of all time on Spotify, with 11 songs in the Spotify Billions Club, a set of tracks that have surpassed one billion streams each on the platform. Coldplay’s tunes are included in over 100 million user-generated playlists worldwide, and all Barça fans associate their song Viva la Vida with the men’s first team’s triumphs in 2009 when it became the soundtrack to a series of historic sporting achievements.’
A statement from Coldplay said: ‘We’re honoured that Spotify has chosen to feature our Moon Music design on the shirt of FC Barcelona. We’ve had a special relationship with the city and the club for many years. We’re also proud to support the UNHCR in their life-saving work to protect refugees and displaced people around the world. Heartfelt thanks to Spotify and FC Barcelona for making this happen.’
Barcelona has put the names of popular music artists on its shirt for the Clásico matches in recent seasons since teaming up with music streaming service Spotify, which sponsors both the team’s shirts and the Camp Nou stadium. Those artists include The Rolling Stones, Rosalía and Drake. ALSO READ: Jagger watches Barça wear Stones logo in ‘El Clásico’, but Real Madrid steal win.
