Baby found abandoned in a sports bag on street in Barcelona

With a cold wave currently hitting Spain and with temperatures close to zero C in the city of Barcelona, a baby boy of barely two months old was left abandoned in a sports bag in the area of the Sants district early on Tuesday morning.

The Catalan police, the Mossos d’Esquadra, received a call just after 6am from a citizen who had discovered the infant in a sports bag on Carrer Begur

Emergency services transported the baby to Sant Joan de Déu hospital in a stable condition. The police said that the baby was not crying and that it was clothed and covered with a blanket.

So far, the authorities ‘do not know who is responsible for leaving the child’ and have opened an investigation into the incident. This will include ‘looking for any witnesses, checking nearby CCTV footage, or even the GPS phone signals from passers-by’, a Mossos officer said.

The police have not ruled out that someone ‘could be charged with abandoning an infant, and attempted murder’.
