The UK government has made some changes to the rules on travelling to England, as far as Covid measures are concerned.
As of 4am on Friday 7 January, eligible fully vaccinated travellers and under 18s will no longer have to take a pre-departure test or self-isolate on arrival in England, but must continue to take their post-arrival tests.
From 4am on Sunday 9 January, eligible fully vaccinated travellers and children aged 5 to 17 will be able to take a lateral flow test instead of a PCR on or before day two of their arrival in England. Lateral flow tests for travel can be booked from Friday and taken upon arrival, by the end of day two.
Anyone who receives a positive result on their lateral flow test must self-isolate immediately and order a NHS PCR test.
There are no changes to the travel requirements for unvaccinated adults. Unvaccinated passengers must continue to take a pre-departure test, PCR test on or before day two and on or after day eight and self-isolate for 10 days. ‘Test to release’ remains an option for unvaccinated people to shorten their self-isolation period.

Travelling to Spain from the UK
Since Wednesday 1 December, all travellers arriving to Spain from the UK need to show proof of being fully vaccinated against Covid-19. However, this new rule does not apply to:
- Children under the age of 12.
- Spanish or EU citizens and their family members.
- Residents in Spain and other travellers for essential reasons.
The new rule therefore essentially applies to travellers to Spain for ‘tourism or any other non-essential reasons’. The Spanish Embassy in London last stated that only ‘British and other third-country citizens, coming from a risk area/country (including the UK)’, travelling for ‘tourism or any other non-essential reasons’ must show a full vaccination certificate.
Other travellers have the option to show a negative test result, proof of recovery from Covid, or a certificate of full vaccination. All passengers (including children under 12 years old) travelling by air or sea must still complete and sign an online Health Control Form.
