Spain reduces Covid confinement period to seven days

Latest: Coronavirus in Spain figures (14 Jan)

The Spanish Health Ministry and regional health authorities have agreed to reduce the confinement period for those infected with Covid-19 from ten days to seven days. The new measure starts from Thursday 30 December.

Spain’s Public Health Commission, in which the regional authorities and the Ministry of Health are represented, agreed ‘unanimously’ on Wednesday to the new measure. Some regions had proposed to reduce the confinement period to just five days, but this was rejected.

Likewise, unvaccinated individuals who have been in close contact with a positive case will also have their isolation period reduced to seven days. The rule already established that those vaccinated and in close contact did not have to quarantine.

At a press briefing on Wednesday evening, Spanish Health Minister Carolina Darias clarified that the reduction of confinement to seven days was for all those who showed no symptoms – those with Covid, as well as those who are unvaccinated and in close contact with them.

Covid figures in Spain on Thursday showed that the overall incidence rate had risen to 1,775 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. Also read: Coronavirus in Spain figures (30 Dec)
