Renfe cancels nearly 1000 trains because of strike

Renfe has been forced to cancel 950 trains on Wednesday 14 August – the second day of partial stoppages for the four organised during the summer period by workers of the rail operator – and coinciding with one of the busiest travel days of August.

The first strike was called for 31 July when many people were hoping to travel and commence their summer vacations.

The strike planned for 14 August coincides with Spain’s national holiday of Thursday 15 August (Assumption Day) – with many planning to travel and take advantage of the ‘puente’ long weekend.

The strikes consist of two four-hour periods – between 12 noon and 4pm and 8pm and midnight.

Two more strike days are planned for 30 August and 1 September to coincide with the travel plans of those returning from their summer vacation.

The Spanish government has said that Renfe must guarantee minimum services during the stoppages with 75% of commuter trains running during rush hours and 50% during other times.
