CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures
The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Thursday 21 October for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 4,995,176. This is an overall increase of 1,881 against the figure released on Wednesday, of which 975 have been registered in the past 24 hours.
Wednesday had seen an overall increase of 2,528 over Tuesday, of which 1,285 were registered in 24 hours.
The overall incidence rate across Spain has remained flat at 43.26 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. On Wednesday it was 43.15 and Tuesday 41.90. The region with the lowest incidence rate is Asturias at 22. It is at its highest in the Basque Country at 63. See below for the incidence rate for each region.
There have now been 20,527 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 4,995,176. The figure for the past 7 days is 10,940.
There are currently 1,775 people hospitalised for Covid-19 in Spain (previously 1,828), representing a 1.45% occupation of hospital beds across Spain (1.49%). 434 are in intensive care (447), representing 4.76% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid patients across Spain (4.91%).
The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic on Thursday 21 Oct is now 87,102 – an increase of 20 since Wednesday.
Increase in infections per region & current incidence rate
Of the 975 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours (and current incidence rate) on Thursday 21 Oct, the numbers per region are as follows:
- 303 in Madrid (current incidence rate: 47)
- 100 in Castilla y León (41)
- 77 in the Canary Islands (37)
- 77 in the Valencia Region (41)
- 75 in Aragón (58)
- 55 in Catalonia (58)
- 55 in Murcia (55)
- 50 in Andalusia (30)
- 45 in Navarra (60)
- 36 in the Balearic Islands (58)
- 32 in Extremadura (36)
- 20 in Cantabria (49)
- 20 in Asturias (22)
- 20 in Galicia (14)
- 4 in Castilla La Mancha (35)
- 3 in La Rioja (25)
- 0 in the Basque Country (63) – no update today
- 3 in Ceuta (20)
- 0 in Melilla (36)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain
Latest figures (with data collated up to Monday 18 October) show that Spain has administered 71,072,261 jabs of the Covid vaccine. 37,086,628 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 78.2% of the total population.
